JAC Delhi Choice Filling Strategy 2026
In JAC Delhi counselling, your choice selection list is the single most critical factor determining your B.Tech college and branch. Even with an excellent JEE Main rank, a poorly constructed choices sheet can leave you with a suboptimal branch or no seat at all. This guide details how the seat allotment algorithm works and provides strategic guidelines to build your priority list.
1. How the JAC Allotment Algorithm Works
Many students incorrectly assume that their choices affect other candidates' chances. The JAC Delhi allotment engine works sequentially through the merit list:
- The algorithm processes candidate ranks from Rank 1 onwards down the line.
- When it reaches your rank, it looks at your preference list starting from Choice #1.
- It checks if there is an empty seat in your Choice #1. If yes, it immediately allocates it to you.
- If Choice #1 is full, it moves to Choice #2, then Choice #3, and so on. It allocates the highest available choice on your list that still has vacancy.
- Crucially, a student with Rank 5,000 will always get their preferred branch over a student with Rank 10,000, regardless of where they placed that choice.
2. Three Golden Rules of Choice Ordering
To ensure the algorithm works in your favor, follow these absolute structuring rules:
- Always Order by True Preference: Never place a lower-preferred option above a higher-preferred option because you think "I have a better chance of getting it." Place your dream college & branch at the top, followed by realistic options, followed by safety backups.
- Include Safety Net Options: If you only fill 3-4 top choices (e.g. DTU CSE, NSUT CSE, IIITD CSE) and your rank is 40,000, you will get "No Seat Allotted". Always list choices that you are certain to get based on past cutoffs to act as a fallback safety net.
- Avoid Unwanted Choices: Never add a branch or college that you are absolutely unwilling to join. If you are allotted any seat, you must pay the ₹95,000 seat acceptance fee to remain in counselling. If you reject the seat and do not pay, you will be permanently kicked out of all regular counselling rounds.
3. College Hierarchy & Preference Models
Depending on your career goals, you should select one of the following preference models:
- Branch First (Placement Focus): If you want to work in tech/coding, prioritize computer-related branches across all top colleges before moving to ECE/core.1. IIITD CSE
2. DTU CSE
3. NSUT CSE
4. NSUT CSDS
5. DTU Software Eng.
6. IIITD CSAM - College Brand First (Campus Life & Alumni network): If you value a rich college experience, sports facilities, and strong legacy, you might rank DTU or NSUT higher, even if it means opting for ECE or EE.1. DTU CSE
2. DTU Software Eng.
3. DTU IT
4. DTU ECE
5. NSUT CSE
6. NSUT IT
4. Lock Your Choice List Carefully
Once the choice filling window closes, the choices filled by you will be automatically locked by the system. You cannot modify your choice list during subsequent rounds (Rounds 2, 3, 4, 5) of counselling, except during specific correction windows. Always double-check your priority order before the closing deadline.
